Finnich Glen

Twenty minutes north of Glasgow, a slot in the fields drops a hundred feet into somewhere else entirely: red sandstone walls, green water, light that arrives second-hand. The mushroom of rock midstream is the Devil's Pulpit, with the full set of legends attached.

The Victorian steps down — Jacob's Ladder — are worn, steep and slick, and the gorge floods fast after rain. It is not a stroll. It is, however, one of the most otherworldly places in the Central Belt, which is why film crews keep finding it.

The knowledge

Getting there: Off the A809 near Croftamie, south of Drymen. Parking is limited and enforcement real — go early, or walk in from Croftamie.
Best time: A dry spell in late spring or summer, when the water runs low and green.
Local tip: Proper boots, and treat the steps as scrambling. The riverbed view is earned, not given.
